The online platforms like Upwork, Uber, Lyft and WorkMarket are not just used to provide hourly or project work. As part of this study, 6,427 providers who find independent work on twelve on-demand economy platforms were surveyed. And 91 percent of those surveyed said they like controlling when, where and how they work.

The data comes from the Freelancers Union study How to Live the Freelance Life , a research project we partnered with the Freelancers Union on.   As the article's title states, 87% of the surveyed freelancers reported having more than one source of income. But its been very hard to quantify this information via surveys.

The latest economic news and surveys show that the small business economy is finally recovering from the Great Recession.    Key indicators include a strong, positive uptick in small business sentiment surveys and stronger projected growth in the overall economy.   It appears that forecast was correct.

88% use freelancers on projects lasting less than one year. These results are consistent with other surveys, which also show a growing interest in hiring more contingent workers. The key results are: Over 60% of the respondents plan to hire more freelancers next year. 66% said they have their freelancers work on-site.

It shows how freelancers turn to their network to find work, collaborate on projects, meet new people and stay on top of their industry. This is reflected by the fact that 82% of the survey's respondents listed "work of mouth" as their top source of work.     Most of this was not a surprise to us.

The underlying theme from this survey work is that food trucks are not a fad, but instead a viable market segment.
