Ask that you attend training courses on the areas that you could improve, for example business finance or process management. In a previous role I managed 12 Committees all of which had a special interest in different areas of accountancy. I attended all of the Committee meetings and took all of the minutes. If so, well done!

Supervisor recommendations carry a lot of weight when it comes to decisions about raises, promotions, training resources and even job references. For example, participate in meetings, volunteer to sit on important committees and welcome delegated tasks as a way to increase your skills. Be professional.

I do try and set a good example and leave at 5pm however it’s always at least 5.30pm before I walk out the door and if I’m honest it’s not that unusual for me to still be sat at my desk gone 7pm. My recent promotion was a highlight for me and it was lovely to have the support of my team to go from a colleague to the Team Leader.
