Upon reflection, I’d realized that a salary bump would not improve my vitality, but more free time absolutely would. At its heart, the conversation was a re-frame: I was receiving a pay increase—the same salary for reduced hours—I just wouldn’t see the increase in my paycheck. The arrangement was a life-line; I could come up for air.

A lot of assistants work with just their manager so it is important to stress that you consider this to be a partnership and in effect you are working together as a team. I do work well on my own but I also like to get involved in projects and feel that I can contribute to any group work either using my creative or organisational skills.

I also haven’t been growing or learning anything new since Day 1 because my boss won’t give me projects. Granted, I understand that many managers are busy and it’s faster for them to do certain projects. You also have more negotiating leverage for a better salary and projects.

I make an incredible salary so when I tell my husband and friends I want to explore other avenues, they think I'm crazy. I also thought about money, salary negotiation, and how I was spending my time. Reduce the stress and annoying things in your life to maximize your happiness. My boss seems oblivious.
