A major part of my processing speed is in keyboard shortcuts in my e-mail program. You should look into keyboard shortcuts too. For each step of my process, I have a keyboard shortcut such as CTRL-1, CTRL-2 , CTRL-3, etc. For work, I use Outlook. But What About the Important People? I use my phone for this.

I also recognized that the top of the desk was deep enough to hold my Apple Wireless Keyboard and Mighty Mouse, so I checked the height out to see if it was ideal for me to use them while placed on it. It stores my keyboard and mouse when I’m not using them. As luck (or my height) would have it – the setup was perfectly suitable.

I keep projects, priorities, and tasks separate using a departmentalization technique from the Family Manager® Hit List. Current tasks flow onto that Hit List on a weekly basis from a categorized journal where I map out multi-step projects and store priority reminders, and from my calendar. I start each day knowing what I need to do.

My iPad has an awesome case and keyboard made by Zagg (in red of course to match my business brand!). I use Asana for task and project management, and the app is on my iPhone and iPad, so I can see all of my tasks at a glance and add to them if needed. Use a good task tool.

I am not a big fan of touch screen keyboards as they are not a true QWERTY keyboard. The touch screen keyboard won’t give you a fast typing rate because you have to type with one finger versus all 10. It also is cause for a lot of errors. Even the basic programs are free and very helpful.

At the end of the day, your desk should have little more on it than your computer, keyboard, mouse pad, phone, and perhaps a framed photograph of a loved one. I have folders for ‘Clients,’ ‘Projects,’ ‘Music,’ ‘Pictures,’ and ‘Personal.’ When something doesn’t have a home, it stays on your desk and clutter builds.

When the results were in, I met with the person who administered it and one of the things it showed, other than the fact that I ranked very high in administration, was that I work best on short-term projects where I can see the end in sight. I picked up this pen a few months ago and have found it to be indispensable when I’m working on paper and need to differentiate between workspaces and projects. It syncs via Bluetooth and with my tiny fingers the keyboard actually works rather well (again, I’m using one of the original designs ). Coleto Multi-Pen.

Make sure that tasks directly associated with clients come first, consider the financial impact of a project and its completion date on the company, don’t let deadlines control the priority list (expense reports can wait when there are more important tasks), and consider cause and effect (do A to enable B, which accomplishes C).
