As I was doing research for other articles on this blog I came across the International Association of Administrative Professionals' website ("IAAP") and was reminded of the advantages of being part of a professional organization. I was previously a member of IAAP when I was at another firm. It helped to have that support system.

I started my blog A Great Day’s Work to share resources with administrative professionals in an effort to help them be successful in their career and inspire them to lead in the workplace. The association I have participated in the longest is the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP).

We can fill pages and pages of our resume or LinkedIn to set ourselves apart, listing every skill we claim to have. Cost varies based on IAAP membership. They offer invaluable on-going development resources that you won’t want to miss! However, to be honest…it’s not enough.

My next favorite was attending administrative conferences although there were not many offered in my day, mostly IAAP (then PSI) conferences. A great resource for this conversation is my Executives and Assistants Working in Partnership Guide as I mapped out the most common processes and best practices. My third was reading.

Make sure your resume is up to scratch: Your resume should list your skills, your experience in working as a virtual assistant, and any other capabilities that you think potential employers are looking for. Polish up the ol resume It is all right to send your resume out and see what kind of response you get. In this new age of not doing anything more than a quick spell check on documents, make sure you do not have any spelling mistakes in your resume. Job satisfaction is important. They are interested, now what? Excellent material!

Having the opportunity to hash it out with another assistant is a great resource. I can tell you my friends and colleagues got a lot of phone calls in those early days and it was a wonderful resource and help to me. IAAP is a group of assistants who get together and encourage each other in our jobs and careers. 411 Look Up 411.ca
