For many organizations, volunteers can make the difference between successfully delivering services or program or falling short of their goals. Orient and train your volunteer. In order to be effective, volunteers need to receive adequate orientation and training. However, it is becoming more difficult to recruit volunteers.

Tell yourself every day that you are an outstanding person capable of achieving your goals. Define your goals. Your subconscious mind grabs on to defined and written goals. List three short-term and three long-term goals. Set a deadline for each goal and outline the steps you will take to reach your goals.

A leader is a person who guides others toward a common goal, showing the way by example, creating an environment in which other team members feel actively involved in the entire process. A leader’s vision permeates the workplace and is manifested in their actions, beliefs, values and goals. What is a leader? They don’t think ‘I’.

For example: Your manager wants to improve employee technical skills; mentions the benefits of having a needs analysis to plan the training ; and asks you to look into self-study manuals, seminars, teleconferencing and cheaper training options. Identify specific ways to strengthen technical training.

You’ve trained and prepared, you’re motivated and ready, but you end up fourth, fifth or even last. She never did anything to improve her musical ability and she was so focused on this impractical goal that she missed opportunities to engage and develop her genuine skills. Learn, learn, learn.

Set clear goals: Define what you want or need to do. Setting clear goals allows you to see the end and set the steps toward reaching the goal. You can set you goals and know the steps to reach those goals, but if you don’t know where to begin, you’re going to build stress. Stress can compound.
