This trip was part birthday gift, part Christmas escape, part Florida homecoming. My mom tried to help by encouraging me to like stuff that other girls my age liked: clothes, boy bands, teen magazines. She thought that doing something different, something lighter on gifts and heavier on togetherness, would be good for us.
