In instances where people have directly helped me get a job by making an important introduction or went out of their way for me, I will give a gift, if appropriate. I ran a book club for 2 years.

A while back, Coopers & Lybrand (now Price Waterhouse Coopers ) released data from a poll on personal organization. and use a free program like Coperinic, Google Desktop to find them quickly. How much stuff do you have sitting on your desk or in your work area? Finding stuff on my messy desk bears out that statistic. « Now!
