I knew we were going to go back to that city the next year so negotiated with the hotel that if I booked the next event at their venue would they waive the cancellation fee. To conduct a job hunt confidentially, only tell those people you MUST (the recruiters you are interviewing with, etc). When you look for a job, also tell people you are looking confidentially because you are still employed so they can't call your current company. The more you tell your co-workers the more likely it will get out.

What I would like to see being more transparent is the salary range for different positions and the benefits that a company has to offer. I was told they do not give the salary range out, but that it was something potential employees negotiated with them when an offer was made. That is my own business.

Whether you are a department assistant or work for a smaller company, you will be able to find a job more easily. Once you are a high-level assistant there are really only 3-5 people you can work for at any given company because you are overqualified for anything else.
