While you don’t see people smoking inside trains, smoking in restaurants, especially bars, is allowed. A majority of public restrooms (unless in a nice restaurant) in Japan do not have soap, paper towels, or even hand dryers. Free travel size tissues are handed out as a form of advertisement too. So, I usually take with me my identity card (in Europe I can travel only with that, I don’t need a passport), my driver license and my passport. Never used traveler checks so far. You can get those at motels or restaurants. I dig distant journeys.

I went to an Indian restaurant a few years ago and I ordered, apparently, a plate of molten lava. He told me he considered that restaurant’s spice level to be mild, at worst.
