I’ve written posts on both covering letters and resumes so all I would add here is that you should tailor your CV and covering letter for each of the jobs you are applying for. This is why you really really need to tailor your resumes before approaching an agency otherwise you will end up doing what you have always done.

The first step on the long walk to a new job should always be a good CV, obviously the detail in your CV reflects your experience but a well laid out and readable resume will help you stand out from the crowd (and thrust me these days there is a crowd). Only so my resume would get past hiring managers. The job market was very competitive when I began my career and my degree was mentioned each time I interviewed. Yes -when getting to interview stage. I have applied for jobs in the past and not even been interviewed and I think this is because I dont have a degree.
