Unfortunately, that company is no longer in business, but I spent a few years as their community spokesperson, writing professional development articles for admins and traveling the country to meet our admin community on a regular basis. Take a Leadership Role in IAAP. In short, I became an Admin Leader, just as I always wanted to be.

There is a local chapter for IAAP but I don't find it to have the content and structure that I'm looking for. Try to attend training courses that are offered for executive admin as much as you can (even if it is just one time a year and you travel to another city for it). This group is great on skill building. Toastmasters!

My next favorite was attending administrative conferences although there were not many offered in my day, mostly IAAP (then PSI) conferences. Q: As a business owner and busy executive what top skills can an assistant bring that support you the most? This is not an easy skill as some people’s brains prefer to think details.

The CPS certification from IAAP was a very positive step which encouraged me to finish my BA degree. That’s when I turned to IAAP and am currently working towards my CAP-OM certification. Again, these are skills I was able to cultivate on the job. Only the usual Microsoft skills. Not particularly.
