One of the most surprising things for me was to learn that not all companies will give you an expense account or a company credit card. You’d think that if you had a credit card, you’d be safe, but I once had to get a cashier’s check for almost $400 for a work event. Have enough credit. Have cash in your bank account.

After interviewing Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh and seeing the company’s HQ outside of Las Vegas , I knew I wanted to learn more about the nuts and bolts and day-to-day operations of Zappos. And I started in the company as a temp worker in 2004. We do special team building events for them where we can all get together and hang out.

Grow & learn; read, talk to mentors, attend training or a conference, watch webinars, etc. I suggest constant learning before the unexpected change occurs so you can adapt more easily. A few months later I attended an event at the old job and walked up to the director (the birdman) and thanked him.

I'm pushed pretty far in terms of capacity on most days - one extra board meeting or event can result in a spiral of 60 hour weeks. If you don’t have those basics down, it’s not really something you can learn well enough to truly change the trajectory of your career in a reasonable amount of time.
