After interviewing Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh and seeing the company’s HQ outside of Las Vegas , I knew I wanted to learn more about the nuts and bolts and day-to-day operations of Zappos. And I started in the company as a temp worker in 2004. We do special team building events for them where we can all get together and hang out.

In interviews I’ve said that I’ve worked for introverts and extroverts and my job is to conform to the needs of my boss. This means when you show up for the interview you are courteous to everyone. Your interview starts even before you shake hands with anyone or answer an interview question. Exhaust all resources.

You’d think that if you had a credit card, you’d be safe, but I once had to get a cashier’s check for almost $400 for a work event. Whenever you interview for a job, there’s at least 2-3 interviews if not more. Have cash in your bank account. Have money for job hunting and working. You have to wear a different outfit each time.

the COO won't go out of her way for anyone, doesn't attend company events, and is really just plain selfish, the SVP of Product goes out too much to the level where it's inappropriate, the SVP of HR is disrespectful as he's been late to a couple of all-hands meetings, the Director of Facilities thinks she's the queen, etc.).

Other jobs, because they were temp to full time, I didn’t even have the benefits of paid vacation time or paid sick days for almost a year. It always perplexes me when small companies do not hire a temp or have in mind another staff person to fill in for the admin or EA to go on a vacation or call in sick. Vacation in Hawaii or Japan?
