I was in a union environment and I was at the bottom of the years-of-service ladder as I had only been there a year. For example I was applying for a job in the legal environment so wanted to highlight that experience.] The rumour mill was in full swing at work. Was there any hope I would keep my job? Things were not looking good.

There seems to be a lot of controversy over this issue, but personally I think swearing is inappropriate for the office environment and comes across as unprofessional. I have worked in offices where there was a zero tolerance for swearing and in other offices where swearing was common and acceptable.

Most people work in a team environment. I often work through my lunch breaks and work after hours many evenings whenever I need to get a job done. I just seem to have a hard time in the morning. I do however appreciate the need to be on time. When we are late we throw off the team momentum. People are relying on us to get to work on time.

There are advantages and disadvantages to hearing your neighbours in a work environment. Sometimes co-workers have conversations right outside your cubicle which can also be very distracting when you are on a phone call with a client or are trying to transcribe a tape or even concentrate on a task that needs all your attention.

A team environment comes in handy at this time so the assistants can plan to cover each other. Keeping an up-to-date vacation calendar is important so these overlaps are anticipated and in some cases vacations have to be re-scheduled. This should be done a few months before the summer rush begins.

It was the most fun working environment I had ever been in. I often told them they should take their show on the road as they were always bouncing jokes off each other. Some days it was like being in a Monty Python movie. It was also the busiest office I had ever worked in.

I think I need the structure of the office environment to keep myself on track. She also confessed that sometimes she wakes up at night thinking of something she needs to do and ends up going down to her office and doing some work in the wee hours of the morning. I would also miss the social side of working with my co-workers.

Making myself at home in my new environment. When I leave my desk I want it to be fresh and waiting for the new person to make it their home. I always love it when I start a new job. Sitting at my new desk and putting things the way I like them. It is always good to leave a job on good terms and help to make the transition smooth.

Some assistants work in a secretarial pool environment and take a task to their desk to work on it and in those cases being plugged in may be helpful. An assistant also needs to be tuned in and aware of what their boss is doing. Their job is to assist and in order to do that we need to listen.
