If you have to reschedule, send an email apologizing, but advise that your bosss schedule has changed. Depending on the importance of the impromptu meeting, it may need to be changed to another timeslot to accommodate his or her calendar. Usually when I point out the conflict to my boss, he is more than willing to make the change.

There comes a time when companies need to pony up the money and either pay for your training or pay for a professional instead of heaving everything off on the admin because theyre cheap. I could see him looking after himself, trying to organise his diary and all his emails etc, and he wasn't sure what to give me. When I first started the job I am in now, my boss had never had administrative support before. It took me only a couple of days to go into his office and say, ok, ground rules!!

So the next time a call comes in from the Receptionist I think, OK so its just her so I say "Hi" and then it is an external call she is patching through and she hasnt told me. I shut it off!
