I’ve used all of these methods at one time or another when the events of an email gone wrong or some other item of note has me off my game. A change of pace and scenery can do wonders, and I have found that simply by walking away that I have a renewed sense of vigor when I return to the keyboard. Still, it was frustrating.

You bashed monsters by hitting keys on your keyboard whilst wondering if you could hook up a nodding bird à la Homer Simpson. I love that I get emails and comments telling me that a blog post came at just the right time. Give yourself time to play with words – not with any productive end-result in mind, just for the joy of it.

Establish Core Business Hours Your core business hours can be flexible insofar as when you’re generally most productive, but they’re set in stone after you’ve chosen them. If you work more than that, you cease to be productive. DO NOT look at a single work email after that. You have plenty of time left for that client.

Now, when I say ‘don’t write’, I don’t mean you should take a break or get away from the keyboard for a day. By the way, sub-vocalization is a handy little process to keep in mind when you’ve spent money to take a course or buy an info-product. They might even tell their friends about it. Extra reader win.

Sure, it’s great to hit the snooze button and give yourself an extra hour of R&R once in awhile, but before you know it, you’re getting up at noon and puttering around before you answer your customer emails.
