I often find myself pulled in too many directions, reacting to phone calls, email and other stuff that pops up. I used to try and squeeze them in between phone calls, emails and posting on Facebook, but there were days when I’d leave my office without accomplishing anything. You can easily spend 30 minutes browsing emails , answering text messages or watching dog videos on Facebook. Put e-books on your phone. You can always find time to read as long as you have reading material with you—and what better way to do that than through your phone? Work out your body while you work out your brain!

I usually just ask for a word of advice via email, but most of them talked to me on the phone and offered to read my essays and share feedback. In one of those preparation phone calls, one current student gave me this final piece of advice: “I know this may sound trite, but when it comes to your application, really be yourself.”.

I switch off my phone and stash it out of sight. How refreshing would it be to press reset on the hours I normally waste mindlessly scrolling through Facebook? Facebook bores me, but I’m itching for it anyway. During the lulls, I’m no longer a member of the pick-up-your-phone-to-fill-the-void club. I want the distraction.

And I'm always connected to Facebook, obviously. Here is an example of why: I was just checking my emails before going to bed (I'm on vacation in Georgia, just south of Russia, 12 hours ahead of pacific time) when I saw an interview request from foxbusiness.com journalist. My Kindle app is a lifesaver while traveling.
