Not all people who plan meetings are “meeting planners,” nor do all meeting planners start out their careers as meeting planners. I for one, started out on a clerical/administrative path with absolutely no knowledge at the time that a career in meeting planning even existed (and at the time it probably didn’t).

The first time I became involved in planning meetings was in my role as an office manager/prospect donor researcher in the Grants and Development Office of a state university.

My boss tells me I should be able to write a letter or a report on something even if I dont know the subject that well. Read their letters and reports and see how they craft their words. There are many teachers in my extended family and it seemed like something I could do well, but our family did not have any money to further my education and I became a secretary instead. She saw the importance of this training to help her daughter know the workings of an office from the bottom up and the office benefitted from her educational training. The administrative position can be a springboard for a management position if you want to go in that direction and have the right educational background.

Her office encouraged her when they saw her knack for numbers and she pursued further education and is now a junior accountant. Very educative!!
