Below are some things that I have found helpful to build my network: Join a professional association such as the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP). IAAP is a group of assistants who get together and encourage each other in our jobs and careers. Read professional magazines when you get the opportunity.

There are many teachers in my extended family and it seemed like something I could do well, but our family did not have any money to further my education and I became a secretary instead. My opinions are based on experience, education, trial and error and blunders and bloopers made throughout my life and career. Excellent material!

I have always been a believer in sharing ideas and have received my best education from other assistants. She saw the importance of this training to help her daughter know the workings of an office from the bottom up and the office benefitted from her educational training. The administrative position can be a springboard for a management position if you want to go in that direction and have the right educational background.
