The rumors are true: In-person events are back, and in a big way, according to American Express’s 2023 Global Meetings and Events Forecast. Not only are 90% of meetings in North American companies expected to have an in-person component this year, but 63% of North American respondents expect attendee numbers to return to 2019 levels in the next year or two.

What’s going on: Federal Reserve economists have raised concerns about the historically high percentage of distressed companies in the U.S., which currently stands at around 37%, according to Business Insider. This distress is largely due to the Fed’s interest rate hikes that were implemented to combat inflation. These hikes have increased borrowing costs, causing a strain on U.S. businesses , particularly those already burdened with debt.

What’s going on: Canada announced its Tech Talent Strategy which is set to introduce a streamlined work permit for U.S. H-1B visa holders. The permit will allow H-1B visa holders to apply for a Canadian work permit, while also offering study permit opportunities for their family members accompanying them, according to Business Today. This would include eligibility to apply for a temporary resident visa.

A new report from IWG claims that suburbs, small towns and rural areas across the US and UK are booming, as people take advantage of hybrid working to migrate from larger cities. The study, undertaken in partnership with Arup, suggests that an estimated 500,000 people will leave US cities this year – 59 percent higher than pre-2020 levels – with most moving to suburbs, revitalised former dormitory towns and rural areas.
