Bear in mind, I had been recruited or referred into my past couple of roles, so my resume hadn't been top of mind for a while. At first blush, my pride flared up and my internal Vanessa started to craft a sassy retort to the gentleman about the awesomeness of my resume, yada yada. And boy was this a huge mistake on my part!

Send your cover letter and resume to a specific person, their general email address, or fill out their online form/application. And since I was there, I dropped off my resume and cover letter. In college, I sat next to this girl and I overheard she interned at a very prominent radio station. No, maybe 1 minute.

If appropriate and true, during the interview process, you can mention you take the time to have lunch with other assistants, interns, or other co-workers just to understand them better as people, the office environment, and pick their brain for advice. I also always bring many copies of my resume, cover letter, and recommendations.

And as I climbed the admin ladder, when I got recruited for a project manager role, the person who referred me was also someone I had met when I was “just a temp” stuffing those thousands of envelopes.
