The encoding stage refers to the process of putting information into memory. Put pen to paper (or finger tips to keyboard) and record important dates in a calendar, notebook or on your mobile device. For example, remembering the number sequence of: 6-3-2-4-8-1-7-9 could be remembered easier if the sequence is chunked into: 63-24-81-79.

I find it really slows down the process and I have the Check Grammar While You Type on so feel that is enough.

And then your only task will be to keep it that way, so that you never have to go through that crazy process of starting from scratch again. It would be much easier to keyboard it but I know it wouldn’t have the same effect as writing it by hand. I do feel much more comfortable with a keyboard than hand though.

Now, when I say ‘don’t write’, I don’t mean you should take a break or get away from the keyboard for a day. Take me, for example. It’s called sub-vocalization, which is a natural brain process we use while we read. Text-to-speech and speech-to-text are two great potential examples.

For example, if all you need is a place to store contact information and keep your calendar, that is much different than a system that can prompt you for different types of follow up, keep templates, etc. For example, techno-phobes shouldn't force themselves to use a computerized calendar if they are more comfortable with a paper planner.
