I temped here and there for a year. Finally, I got a job interview through the temp agency for a one-year contract. A few days ago I went to this man’s retirement party and there were a lot of nice things said about him. Thank you Mr. B for taking me on and I wish you all the very best in your retirement.

This quickly led into a change of career and I became a recruitment consultant working for high street agencies. A move to London happened around 1996 and my first role as a PA for the Director of Human Resources for a recruitment agency. A fabulous role which I loved.

After only 2 weeks, I found a great company through a staffing agency and the position was full time working for a wonderful CEO. The staffing agent asked if I was open to temp to perm, even though the position was for a full time EA, he feels the CEO may need time to see if it is a good fit. How long do you think is fair?

Companies are hedging their bets by hiring temps instead a steady workforce. The long term prediction is that a decade from now the retirement of the baby boomers could cause labor shortages which again lead to opportunities. Most of them are expressing the negativity that currently exists in the labor market.

I was out of work, temping here and there for a year. Don’t underestimate the value of temping. Working for a temp agency can either land you a full-time job or help to keep you employed while you are looking. Taking on temp jobs will introduce you to potential employers where you can showcase your abilities.

The gentleman on the call introduced himself as a consultant with a well-known local staffing agency who had reviewed the resume I had uploaded to the organization's website. I didn't love kow-towing to the age haters, but I also need to work, and let's face it, I am nowhere near ready to retire!

The CNN article focuses on the growing use of temps. My own experience: December '09, while everyone was getting laid off, I quit my job as executive creative director at a marketing agency and started a a network of media and marketing partners. This prevents automated programs from posting comments.
