She said that new assistants are mentored for the first year of their working career. They work initially as an assistant-in-training and report to a senior assistant for mentoring and help with anything that comes up on the job. Because of this mentoring program they had no problem hiring young assistants right out of college.

We’ve noticed that the number of administrative professionals have been surfacing on Twitter has been increasing. With more assistants and professionals advocating for and teaching others how to use this valuable communication tool, assistants are seeing the value and deciding to jump on board. I tell redonkulous stories.

There are always areas each of us can improve upon, but I think we are the ones who can teach each other through mentoring new employees, writing articles on ideas we have or techniques for getting the job done and even speaking about it. Sometimes I think we look to others to teach us, when we really are the experts ourselves.

Today’s administrative assistant is much more than a secretary, but we seem to have the same idea as in the past. I read our professional magazines and notice that the majority of the articles are written by office consultants or HR professionals. I started out wanting to write an article on mentoring.
