She thought that doing something different, something lighter on gifts and heavier on togetherness, would be good for us. In 2017, I left my job as the editor of a magazine to freelance and spend time with my dad in his final years. We had a few last-minute gifts to buy. I sang it when I pulled out of that rental house and moved to another city. I sang it when I was sick of work or home. I was decidedly happier for having done that. Laura was pregnant.
