I’ve happily signed up for all kinds of email lists. Just this: If you are trying to give yourself a shortcut by not asking for your clients’ permission before you sign them up for your sales list, newsletter, or any other form of unsolicited information, you’re shooting yourself in the foot. They could have asked.

Basically, you can do whatever you want: put it as a free download on your site, send it by email to your friends, frame it and put it on your desktop, dip it into chocolate and eat it while pretending you’re dieting. So, pretty much everything. Your series was a wonderful resource, and now it is a wonderful resource tied together.

Email: Some of the people that I’ve followed for a long time have also becoming regular contributors to my email inbox. I currently contribute a monthly article to Jonathan Wells’ newsletter SharingLifeSkills.com , and with Steven I initiate all sorts of blogging challenges, or we brainstorm projects together.

You can chose your own goal, your own improvement area, and then use my blog as a motivator and trigger of inspiration. You can offer some assets in exchange to some loyalty: the classical free ebook in exchange of a newsletter subscription. It would have been something like Brilliantly Better Blogging, for instance. This is what I do.

They can be collective newsletters, like the very fine SharingLifeSkills , of which I’m proud to be a part, or they can be magazine style, like The Daily Brainstorm. Check out the page because you will start to understand why interacting with your peers is never competition. Of which I’m also honored to be a part of, by the way.

I subscribe to a newsletter called Early to Rise, but I’ve noticed that I’ve been staying up later and getting up later. No emails from the site editor. Firing off a biting email demanding answers and an apology probably won’t win you repeat business. Write the email and then trash it. Get a Firm Commitment By this point, that nasty email is starting to feel like a missed opportunity. And then nothing happens. But God knows you want to.

A paid newsletter is another way to deliver content. It can be just a “regular&# email or it can be a PDF (I tried to one like that and couldn’t keep on schedule and canned it—I’m considering private feed aggregation instead). People can and do pay for these kinds of newsletters. Is the goal training?

No matter how good you are at multi-tasking, you’re going to get a lot more done in a single hour of uninterrupted work than you would if you answered an email every five minutes and picked up the phone halfway through your 60-minute time frame. Newsletters the same. Set those boundaries and start abiding by them strictly.
