The truth is that charging by the hour is terribly customer unfriendly and is therefor very bad for your small business and start-up business, like SOHO-, SME, SMB-, Micro-, Lifestyle-, Home-, DIY-, Hobby-, Boomer- or Personal business, like professional, contractors, freelancer, self-employed, sole-trader and virtual assistants.

In hynsight everyone would agree it would be one of the worst industries at the worst time to begin a business. Keep overheads to a minimum, review and change your suppliers if there not giving you the best value for money and service. Promote your value for money. Cheapest isn’t the best. Next, does the accountant have relevant experience in the industry you are in, or an allied industry, after all, it’s going to make life a lot easier if he actually knows a bit about the industry you’re in when offering advice. fixed prices for compliance work as part of the selection criteria. If SME’s could not in the past afford Enterprise Software, the same held true for the Software Industry: they could not afford SME’s, since there was just no way to profitable reach millions of small businesses. The cost of customer acquisition vs. the very low license fees made it an uneconomical model, whether via direct or channel sales.

I believe that the whole trend of home working may in the future allow us to have a much more natural work/life balance and will reverse some of the damaging effects of the post industrial revolution changes in our society.
