When people would ask me in interviews, my first answer was, “No nepotism here!” I learned through informational interviews that I should apply to temp agencies. So be warned - often unfairly, the first job you take out of college becomes your specialty. After I was laid off I of course had to go look for another job. I was called in for an interview at an agency and it was the assistant that did all the vetting of the candidates. In hindsight, there was fault in my thinking.

Any time you interview where this situation occurs you are allowed to ask very politely. If this new executive is high-profile in your industry or field, I am sure by reading articles about them or talk of the town, what you wrote above is again, pretty accurate. Job hunting and dating are very similar.
