Stand up for yourself more Assertiveness was never my strong suit, especially when I was younger. I’ve discovered that assertiveness—without compromising kindness, respect or professionalism—is empowering. Live and learn, right? Setting budgets. I’m 60 and still learning new things decades into my career.

I have applied for positions I was overqualified for and thankful for what I learned from them. Several years ago, I found myself in a position at a company that was facing budget cuts. Possible boredom is alleviated when you continue learning and create better procedures; your workday becomes the most productive it can be.

We have to be experts at IT, we have to have great people skills and we have to be assertive and confident to be able to handle all of the daily tasks asked of us! Another factor is that they simply don’t have the budget for it, especially if they have staff that need expensive professional qualifications and CPD programmes.
