Files you need to maintain for legal reasons (tax returns, legal documents) are archives and should be kept in a less accessible spot, like the attic or the top shelf in the closet. Also shred credit card applications.

Evernote allows me to upload, add, bookmark, etc anything that I would like to store as a "note" for future reference.
