23% of Traditional Full-Time Job Holders Plan to Switch to Gig Work

Most, according to the report, do this out of financial necessity. According to MetLife's 2019 U.S. Employee Benefits Study, 23% of Americans with full-time traditional jobs intend to switch to gig work over the next 5 years. Another 14% say they are considering it.

  But overall a solid jobs report that shows the economy is on a solid, if modest, growth path The January Employment Situation Summary from the BLS was quite positive.  Total non-farm employment increased 234,000 and the unemployment rate fell to 8.3%.   More importantly, private employment increased by 257,000, more than off-setting a small decline in government employment.  This continues a trend towards stronger private sector hiring.

Freelancers Increasing Their Use of Online Marketplaces to Find Work

As the study chart below shows (click to enlarge), in 2012 only 3 percent of full-time independent workers reported having used an online marketplace to find work in the prior 12 months. Relatively few (8%) report using online talent marketplaces as their primary source of work.
