You might not think so but assistants deal with suppliers on a a regular basis. From hotels to stationery manufacturers, car hire companies and venues for events we are constantly procuring suppliers. It is essential that we know how to procure great suppliers and build effective relationship which benefit our organisation.

Well to be honest there is a slight chink in my event armour; I’m not the best at negotiating. Well I didn’t, I hired a fantastic events co-ordinator to do all of the negotiating with the venue and suppliers on my behalf. Don’t let the supplier rush you into making any decisions. I cannot sing her praises enough!

It can be quite a daunting task asking assistants to negotiate corporate rates with hotels. But assistants can save their organisations a lot of money if they negotiate a special rate with local hotels, particularly if many of their colleagues or clients stay overnight. Work with other assistants in your organisation.

At first the consultants picked their own hotels and put the cost through their expenses and as you can imagine their choice of hotels varied wildly and so did the price. I spent a long time managing the relationship with the serviced apartment supplier and also dealt with all of the positive and negative feedback from the consultants.

It is quite common now to have help with travel arrangements as most companies do employ an outside supplier to book flights, hotels and car hire. Some airlines and hotels will hold back from advertising their best prices online because they like to maintain a good relationship with travel agency. CTI Roadshows.
