The goal is to get INFORMATION and ADVICE which almost anyone can provide, not ask for an interview, a favor, or a job. This also means applying for jobs online through Monster, Craigslist, company websites, or sending your cover letter and resume via snail mail, which has also worked for me. The worst they could say was no.
