More commonly called genetic engineering, potential applications include new forms of biofuels, bacteria based biosensors, bacteria that eat pollutants and new drug therapies. Lab equipment is expensive and it's good to have experienced, knowledgeable people around for instruction and support. As this video from PSFK shows , the lab looks very cool and there's no sign of monsters.
