This has come to light for me because, in the past 2 weeks, Jasmine and I have received personal handwritten notes, little gifts, cards, letters and emails of gratitude from people whose lives we have touched and didn’t even know it. One note was especially touching as the woman told us about a horrible car accident she was in and the difficult time she went through in therapy learning how to walk, eat and talk again.

” When sending emails to your client, take the time to address them by name, like “Hi, Susan,” or “Dear Jim.” Simply beginning an email with the content is disrespectful and makes it appear that you are too busy to include a proper greeting; thus, too busy for them. And email etiquette is a big deal, so always use complete sentences, etc., and proof your email before you send it. Learn as much as you can about your client’s business.

Why Thank-You Notes Matter

When I was a child, my mother began nagging me the day after Christmas to write thank-you notes to all my aunts and uncles who had sent me gifts. The nagging didn't stop until I had them written, so I learned to write them quickly so that I could get back to playing with all the toys Santa had delivered. While etiquette rules say you can wait about three months to send a thank-you note for a wedding gift, it needs to be much sooner than that after a job interview.
