It is amazing what you pick up from your neighbours. I work in a cubicle and hear things going on around me all the time. You won’t be completely up to speed, but normally you have some idea of what the person was doing. There is a negative aspect to hearing what your neighbours are up to.

I work in a back office environment, where 99% of our client interaction is via the phone, e-mail or outside of the office, so I can wear jeans and a t-shirt. However, for business casual and business dress environments, Im still a purist. Imagine a person wearing this showing up to a lunch with a client.

I was on the inside seat, closest to the window, and instead of getting up to let me by, she just moved over a bit. Of course I said I was sorry, but she really should have gotten up to let me out. Sometimes it is better to speak on the phone or in person. It was her own fault. The bus jerked and stomp, I stepped on her toes.

Some people have plugged in to help drown out the distracting noises from neighbouring cubicles, which can be helpful as long as your music isn’t in turn disturbing your neighbours.
