As part of an internal research initiative centered on this topic, SmithGroup’s Workplace Practice convened panels of Gen Z employees in Detroit, Michigan and Chicago, Illinois to learn more about the personal and professional goals that drive this generation. As such, they want more out of their workplace than a standard cubicle.

Even knowing what someone’s office looks like, how tidy they keep their desk and what pictures fill the walls of their cubicle, can provide a level of comfort. Confident team-building happens slowly over time, and in a digital-only working environment, that development will require engagement from both employer and assistant.

People didn’t hesitate to plop themselves down at her desk—even when she was on the phone or heads down working. Aside from in-person interruptions, we’re constantly bombarded with IMs, phone calls, emails and so much more. So, as his secretary, I learned to intentionally leave a few gaps in his schedule each day, just in case.

It’s considered a more family friendly environment. You have access to more resources, such as better technology and online learning (which is usually provided by the company). You get to have more one-on-one contact with your clients. You can voice your opinion more so, since there are few executive personnel.

People have to learn that they are not the only ones that need things to get done quickly. Theres just 8 hours in a work day (give or take, depending your work environment) and you can only do so much. Apparently, everyone comes to me all at the same time. They are there to help, since they are managing you.
