I was out of work, temping here and there for a year. Being a member is not only a great place for networking, but for mentoring and learning of jobs in your area. Don’t underestimate the value of temping. Working for a temp agency can either land you a full-time job or help to keep you employed while you are looking.

You care less, you’re easily annoyed, you start to do a cost-benefit analysis, you feel resentful, and you feel short changed. Even asking to intern, shadow, or be mentored by someone well respected is a great first step. This is one of the main reasons why I endorse temping and working thru recruiting and placement agencies.

The staffing agent asked if I was open to temp to perm, even though the position was for a full time EA, he feels the CEO may need time to see if it is a good fit. I have no idea how long "temp" is considered before they would offer the permanent position. It feels like a bait and switch and there are no guarantees.

I learned through informational interviews that I should apply to temp agencies. So I left that temp gig and went to work for the CEO.

And as I was working, job hunting and/or temping, I had to find other sources of happiness. I would rather go to a pilates studio that has classes late at night that fits my work hours vs going to a gym that only costs $30 a month. Volunteer and mentor online by being an email pen pal. It also looks bad on one’s resume.
