When I started my new job, I had never taken minutes before so I did my homework, talked to my friend who was an expert minute taker, took a course, read everything I could get my hands on and when the big day came to take minutes at a Board of Directors meeting, I acted as if I knew what I was doing and played the part of being the most confident professional person at the table. We can't know everything, but our boss's certainly don't need to know that.

If you are the presenter you have to study and know your subject well which helps you to be more confident in what you know and you also gain experience in making presentations which can help you in your career. If you are part of an administrative team you can use your meetings to share knowledge with each other or give tips on something new you have discovered. A manager has to have confidence that you know how to do your job. I just did not have confidence that this person was going to be able to assist me. Here are some things an assistant can do to help their boss have more confidence in them: Repeat back what your boss asked you to do so they know you understand the request and ask questions if you dont. One time we had to cancel at the last minute, but we were a few days past the cancellation date. My last Board meeting I ordered lunch for 10, but I had 15 Board members in attendance. This is something you really need to experiment with and you will gain more confidence to order less and know there will be enough food. To-do lists I have to-do lists for the Board and Committee meetings and a to-do list for the Board Reception and Dinner. I feel confident as I check off each item that things will be done on time. Minute Template I take my minutes on a laptop so prepare a minute template ahead of time.

It also eases your bosss mind when they see you write it down, it gives them confidence it will be taken care of. I have daily meetings with my boss so sometimes I print the e-mails that I have questions on and put it in a folder and then we go through each item and he lets me know what, if anything, I need to do. If he is travelling, I send it by e-mail, but it has been my experience that I will get better results with a face-to-face meeting. Minute taking made easier.

Writing when you don't know what you're talking about.

I wrote the article The Art of Minute Taking and I had only taken minutes a few times about 25 years ago. I interviewed my friend who is a minute taker. I asked her questions to prompt her and got her talking about minute taking while I took notes. At the end of it, I knew how to take minutes and could write about it. From writing that article I had confidence to take a job that required me taking minutes and it has turned out fine.
