I temped here and there for a year. Finally, I got a job interview through the temp agency for a one-year contract. A few days ago I went to this man’s retirement party and there were a lot of nice things said about him. Thank you Mr. B for taking me on and I wish you all the very best in your retirement.

Companies are hedging their bets by hiring temps instead a steady workforce. The long term prediction is that a decade from now the retirement of the baby boomers could cause labor shortages which again lead to opportunities. Most of them are expressing the negativity that currently exists in the labor market.

I was out of work, temping here and there for a year. Don’t underestimate the value of temping. Working for a temp agency can either land you a full-time job or help to keep you employed while you are looking. Taking on temp jobs will introduce you to potential employers where you can showcase your abilities.

The gentleman on the call introduced himself as a consultant with a well-known local staffing agency who had reviewed the resume I had uploaded to the organization's website. I didn't love kow-towing to the age haters, but I also need to work, and let's face it, I am nowhere near ready to retire!

My own experience: December '09, while everyone was getting laid off, I quit my job as executive creative director at a marketing agency and started a a network of media and marketing partners. This prevents automated programs from posting comments.

Besides having a checking, retirement account, and a rainy day fund, you should also have a huge savings account of 6 months to a year or more of living funds. Sometimes companies don’t validate for parking especially if you are doing testing at a temp agency and are there for a few hours. Have a huge savings account.

The shortest route is to look for temp work thru agencies or TaskRabbit, Craiglist, or volunteer. What job title or job description do you want to have right before you retire and then figure out a game plan and work backwards on how you want to get there. You want to gain as much relevant experience as you can.
