In December 2019, after years of requesting a sabbatical, my board of directors approved a 12-week paid sabbatical planned for June 2020, after our legislative session concluded. We pushed the sabbatical back two years so that I could steer the organization through the pandemic and be able to travel safely. I also did a lot of nothing.

My father, the star of our family, died at the start of 2019. Before 2019 was out, I’d turn 40, Laura and I would each accept unexpected job offers and a publisher would sign me up for a book deal. I got to make up my own schedule and travel on assignments. We had a few last-minute gifts to buy. Laura was pregnant.
