The Workplace Mentors From Hell

On The Job

I've never had a discussion about mentoring without someone offering a story about the mentor from hell. Finding a way to be diplomatic and not totally sabatoging a career while ditching a mentor at the first opportunity can be tough. Most mentees don't want to be disrespectful or unprofessional, but sometimes horrible mentors can push them to extreme measures. Is there a way to check out the credentials of a potential mentor before you make the commitment?

At Your Side: Mentoring in the Workplace

Laughing all the Way to Work

She said that new assistants are mentored for the first year of their working career. They work initially as an assistant-in-training and report to a senior assistant for mentoring and help with anything that comes up on the job. They are encouraged to bring any requests from their boss and run it by their mentors so they can think through the next steps. Because of this mentoring program they had no problem hiring young assistants right out of college.

Someone in Your Corner

On The Job

That’s why mentors can prove to be a gift from the gods for those who need someone not only providing advice based on experience, but a supportive pat on the back when it’s needed. The advantage of having a mentor is that is gives you a person who will provide honest feedback in a secure environment. While many companies help workers set up mentoring relationships, there are times when an employee may want to seek out help confidentially. Tags: mentoring

Are You -- Or Someone You Know -- a "Perfect" Pain?

On The Job

But soliciting opinions from mentors or fair-minded colleagues can help perfectionists learn that feedback is beneficial and will help them improve. I've interviewed enough experts over the years to know what a can of worms you open anytime you mention perfectionism. And perfectionism in the workplace? You're talking a whole caseload of worms. Doesn't it seem kind of strange that we would complain about someone who wants things to be perfect at work?

Make Your Administrative Assistant Your Greatest Asset

Office Dynamics

Be a mentor. You can help by mentoring on a regular basis. In today’s fast-paced corporate world, many managers rely on the newest technology to help their company grow. Between e-mail, virtual assistants, palm pilots, high speed Internet connections and a host of other technological marvels, they mistakenly believe they are more independent than ever—making their own travel plans, faxing their own letters and scheduling their own meetings.

Cutting the apron strings: Gaining confidence to venture out on your own

Laughing all the Way to Work

It is sometimes easy to stay in the student role because it is safe and if you have a strong mentor to live in their shadow, but that is not good for your career development. If you are comfortable in an area and want to try to do it on your own, then do so, but initially I would recommend that you check with your mentor, or a co-worker, and go over it with them. Many times the mentor has to also learn to let go and let you fly on your own.

Following the Leader

Laughing all the Way to Work

If you are a leader and are in a role of mentoring or supervising employees then you need to set the example and show up. At many offices I have worked in I have noticed that many times when a seminar or event for staff is organized, the people who organized it don't show up. If a function is set up at work and the managers don’t show any interest, what does that tell us about how important it is to the company and whether we listen or not?

Five Ways to Network With the Boss

On The Job

Mentor. Want to know a key player many people forget to network with these days? The boss. Yep, the head honcho. The big kahuna. The top dog. You may wonder why you need to network with the boss when a) you see him every day; and b) you see him every day, dammit. But networking involves much more than just trying to get new business or find a new job.

Accepting Authority at Work

Laughing all the Way to Work

I was recently discussing what being a supervisor meant and someone told me it was being a team leader and a mentor, which I thought described the role well. Do you accept authority at work or do you balk when someone tries to tell you what to do? Does it depend on who is asking or the way that you are asked? We all have to accept some kind of authority at work – how are you handling it?

Warning! Have You Become a Toxic Sponge?

On The Job

Get a mentor, either professional or personal, and let them know what's going on. A mentor can help you see different ways to offer support without taking on the world's woes. I once had a job where the boss was a toxic leader. You know the kind: arrogant, small-minded, belittling, etc. (In In short, what Bob Sutton refers to as the "asshole boss.")

Learning To Love a Job You Hate

On The Job

Get a mentor? For whatever reason – it has great health benefits, you like the location and there’s a really cute programmer who works on the fourth floor – you have made the decision that you’re staying with a job you hate. It wasn’t an easy decision. People job hop these days faster than Matthew McConaughey can rip off his shirt. But even though you have to drag yourself into work every day, you’re not going to quit.

We are what we think.let’s start thinking “Important!”

Laughing all the Way to Work

I started out wanting to write an article on mentoring. Assistants who have come from the days of being a secretary seem to have brought along with them the mindset that “I am just a secretary”. At one time being a secretary was a low paying and underappreciated profession. The secretary however was often the glue that held the office together and many times that idea was shown in movies or television shows that portrayed the office.

Moms Are Not Getting Paid What They're Worth.and Neither Are A Lot of Other People

On The Job

Get a mentor. Are you getting paid what you're worth? According to Salary.com , I sure as heck am not. Let me repeat: I'm not getting paid what I'm worth. In it's annual Mom survey, it has been determined that "the time mothers spend performing the 10 most popular 'Mom Job' functions would equate to an annual salary of $116, 805 for a Stay-at-Home Mom and $68,405 for a Working Mom."

Being a member is not only a great place for networking, but for mentoring and learning of jobs in your area. In 1985 I left the office to be a stay-at-home mom. By 1995 when I tried to get back into the administrative field the landscape had changed. In Canada it was becoming increasingly difficult to find a job where you didn’t need to know both English and French. Also, the technology had changed drastically.

Stop Saying "When I Was Your Age"

On The Job

Take a class or enlist the help of a younger worker in exchange for some mentoring from you in other areas. This is a frightening time for everyone in the workplace, when fears abound about what latest economic downturn will result in layoffs. One of the most vulnerable groups of employees are the experienced workers with their higher salaries and richer benefits. Older workers need to understand that this is the time to ratchet up their game.
