Recent research by future of work expert Lynda Gratton  suggests due to longer life spans the traditional life stages - education, work and retirement - no longer work. More interesting is 1/3rd of the people aged 55+ working in the ODE report being retired.

The most recent BLS jobs report showed that almost 500,000 Americans left the workforce  in March, resulting in the workforce participation rate falling to 63.3%. Aging baby boomers are starting to retire. These are the prime work years when people generally aren't in school, retired or disabled.

According to a recent survey close to 60% of men over the age of 50 with incomes of $75,000 or higher reported not feeling confident they will be able to maintain their current lifestyle in retirement.  Even more women, close to 70%, report not feeling confident.

Ugly is only way to describe the August job report.  The Washington Post article says it's a combination of discouraged workers waiting out the recession and retiring baby boomers.  Non-farm payrolls grew by an anemic 93,000. But the big problem is 368,000 people gave up looking for work in August. informal economy.

  NVCA  also reported that the level of 2012 venture funding will likely substantially fall relative to 2011. According to a quite negative report from the Kauffman Foundation , the majority of VC firms have underperformed public markets.   The reason is quite simple. VC returns have been lousy for the last decade.

June's employment report was good news.  - Increasing numbers of baby boomers and seniors working part-time in retirement. Net jobs increased by 195,000 jobs and over 200,000 private sector jobs were added.  The BLS also  revised upward  the prior two months by 70,000 jobs.
