As I was doing research for other articles on this blog I came across the International Association of Administrative Professionals' website ("IAAP") and was reminded of the advantages of being part of a professional organization. I was previously a member of IAAP when I was at another firm.

Another way you can be mentored indirectly is through reading professional magazines, books, blogs and websites. In that sense I am mentoring via the blog.

I read our professional magazines and notice that the majority of the articles are written by office consultants or HR professionals. The secretary however was often the glue that held the office together and many times that idea was shown in movies or television shows that portrayed the office.

The CPS certification from IAAP was a very positive step which encouraged me to finish my BA degree. That’s when I turned to IAAP and am currently working towards my CAP-OM certification. This year I will be seeking some EA certifications through IAAP and Office Dynamics in order to keep my skills fresh and relevant.
