Pulling up to Great Northern Hotel my cab driver told me that not so long ago the hotel and surrounding area used to be a no-go area referring to the clientele as ladies of the night. I thought this was a lovely addition and a real example of the hotel looking after its guests. The restaurant is in a fantastic space.

Well, I believe there was some science behind it, it’s referred to as ‘unconscious bias’ and it’s something I encourage you to become more ‘conscious’ of. For example, if your best friend connects you with another person, psychology suggests that you will have an unconscious bias towards (in favour) of that person.

Also remember to mention the company ethos and that you think it fits in well with your values, for example you like to make a difference at work and the company makes a difference in their marketplace! You do not want to look like you would work for any company because you just want the job (even if this is the case!)

For example if the objective is something specific such as, introducing a new member of the Executive Team to the rest of the department, an informal setting would be ideal but probably not as informal as a pub. As I’ve said many times before every event should have objectives. Even social events! Don’t make it about the business.

Calendar – For quick reference I have a one sheet per day calendar block on my desk. In addition to that as part of our role we are always at one piece of equipment or the other and it is a massive time saver if for example the printer is near our desk. I use the small post-it index flags all the time as well. .

If your presentation contains charts make sure every chart is on a separate slide and is up on the screen when your manager refers to it. If you are using bullet points set up an animation so that each bullet point appears one at a time. Slides should support your point – not make them.

For example this could be people discussing other members of staff that aren’t there to answer for themselves, or events that are taking place in the company that influence jobs and or pay. Quite often assistants are referred to as the ‘eyes and ears’ of their manager. Remember your role and use it to your advantage.
