On The Job

There's a lot of things that challenge me in life and in my work. I cannot flip a pancake without making a mess. I get lost in new places -- even with a map. I find it difficult to focus on work when I know the St. Louis Cardinals are playing. That's why it would be easy for me to say: I'm not a good cook. I panic in new places. I can't focus on work.

Refusing Rush Work Improves Well-Being

Virtual Moxie

Anastasia wrote to ask about charging rush fees. “I haven't charged it before but just got a new client with whom I feel it would be very appropriate. But I am not sure what's the best way to do it - flat fee, or raising the hourly fee or something else, and what's a reasonable percentage.” Oooo.unfortunately, I don’t actually have an answer to the question you posed because I don’t support VAs doing “rush” work.

I recall the person telling us how to use the program and it seemed complicated. Log in, enter your password, press F1 if you want to do this, F2 if you want to do that. When you get to this screen, look on the right hand side and press F11.

Why Your Website Needs to Get Active

Tips From T. Marie

We are a month into the New Year which is about the time the local gyms stop being quite as packed with resolution makers. By this time next month, the elliptical machines and treadmills will once again be available to the ‘regulars’ who frequent the gym regularly. We all know we should be exercising regularly, but the failure rate of resolutions is proof that trying to force ourselves into a healthier activity level seldom works.

Why You Should Work for a "Bad" Boss

On The Job

Everyone wants a "good" boss. This is the manager is who nice, let's you take off when you need and doesn't yell at you. But a "good" boss doesn't always help your career. In fact, the boss that some would classify as "bad" because he or she is demanding, calls you out when you screw up and isn't always nice may be better for you in the long run. First, let me state that no one should work with a boss who is abusive, either emotionally, mentally or physically.

The On-Demand Economy is Not Just Good or Bad

Small Business Labs

We've been getting a lot of feedback on the On-Demand Workforce report Intuit released last week  (we worked with Intuit on this study). Most of it has been positive, a fair amount negative and some of it downright nasty (see the very large comment section in the article  How The On-Demand Economy is Reshaping the 40 Hour Work Week for examples).   Who knew people could get so worked up about a survey?

Sentimental Clutter

Clutter Coach

by In her book Let Go of Clutter , Harriet Schechter writes about how to let go of sentimental clutter. This kind of clutter is stuff with valid emotional attachments, and logic doesn’t play any part in whether you decide to keep it or not. Items that make you feel joyful with the memories they bring back, such as love letters and home movies, you’ll want to keep.

Freedom's Just Another Word for Nothing Left to Lose

by Two years ago, Jenny’s life turned upside down. “The Universe,” she says, “picked me up and spun me around.” She landed in Detroit with her computer and a few bags of clothes. Nothing else. At first, she missed her books and her photo albums, but none of the other stuff. Not a thing. That came as a big surprise. Not only didn’t she miss her houseful of possessions, she actually felt good that it was gone.

Packing List for Holiday Travel

They’re very helpful for making sure nothing falls through the cracks, and I get the satisfaction of checking off items as I do them. I put everything on my checklists because I find that the most common things I forget are the ones that seem most obvious (my toothbrush, for example).
