Should assistants ‘make themselves look busy’?

Practically Perfect PA

Pin It. During my formative years I had a number of part time and weekend jobs to earn some extra money. I mainly worked in shops where I would run around sorting out racks of clothes or helping on the till and changing rooms, it was a busy job, especially at the weekend, spent mainly on your feet and I must admit I absolutely hated it. I have a huge amount of respect for people that work in the retail business because I just couldn’t cut it.

How to Stop Procrastinating

On The Job

I'm not a big procrastinator. In fact, I probably try to do too much all the time, which would account for waking at 4 a.m. and making lists and putting the pork chops in the dishwasher instead of the oven (multitasking is a problem for me.) But I know lots of procrastinators (who may never get around to reading this), so I thought it was a good time to address the subject of procrastination in my Gannett/USA Today column.

(image credit: 123rf.com). Ok, eagles , listen up. This one’s for you! Do you ever feel like a client’s work is a moving target? Maybe what was a top priority yesterday isn’t a even remotely a priority today, or the tool that you collaborated about and were moving forward with implementing is suddenly replaced with some bigger, better somethingorother someone else suggested to your client that she just has to get on board with.

I am honored and thrilled to celebrate with Jasmine her 6-year Office Dynamics anniversary. My, how time has flown and Jasmine has grown and blossomed in ways we could not anticipate 6 years ago. Jasmine uprooted her family to come to work with me and live in a completely strange city where she knew no one. She gave up a good job to come on an adventure with me and little did she know the adventure would be a personally challenging one for me.

Moxie Tip 273: Inside Each of Us, We Have Something Worth Sharing With Others That’s Unique

Virtual Moxie

Unique, yes, but not always easy to find. And once found, not always easy to know what to do with, or how to share it for optimal traction and impact on others. Figuring all that out is probably the hardest thing a person can go through. It may well be the most rewarding, too. Some would say that it's the reason we're here.

Moxie Tip 271: Take Action Toward Your Dream

Virtual Moxie

You can’t say you want something, then engage in behaviors that run contrary. An easy way to understand that is in the way a person might say she wants to lose ten pounds, but the very next day, she’s having cake and ice cream (“Just a little bit—for a celebration!”) at her nephew’s birthday party. Take consistent action TOWARD your dream, not away from it.

Moxie Tip 272: When Reaction Happens

Virtual Moxie

Trust the partner you know, not the behavior that confuses you. If the behavior isn’t usual, then rest easier in what is usual for her. Until you get information about what was going on when she wrote that, and why she sent it, you have more of a reason to trust your past experiences with her, than to jump off the deep end and think the worst. Talk to your partner.

by Donna Toothaker. Have you ever signed on with a new client thinking it was going to be the best relationship ever, only to have things sour at some point? If not, you’re lucky. Of course you don’t go into a new client relationship expecting that to happen, and you certainly hope it doesn’t. But realistically, chances are that at some point during the life of your business, you will experience a relationship gone bad that ends in a “professional divorce.
