On The Job

One of the toughest things to do in your career is to make that long, long walk into your boss's office and tell her that you're not going to make a deadline. Why IT Needs to be Ready to Lead

On The Job

Having your department compared to the DMV isn’t very flattering, but that’s what is happening to many IT departments. That’s because many CIOs are focused on the technology and they don’t really care about the user experience, hence the DMV reference. The comparison is made in a new book, “ The Big Shift in IT Leadership ,” by author Hunter Muller, who contends that many CIOs remain focused inward, only concerned with technology.

Be More Productive With JUST A Pen And Paper

Productivityist

After I wrote this post about how notecards helped me write a book , I began to wonder what other tactile tools I have missed. Was there something else that might work better than the many–and I do mean many–different apps I have used? After I looked around the productivity sites for a good pen and paper system, I settled on the dash plus system created by Patrick Rhone.

The Ups and Downs of the 3D Printing Industry

Small Business Labs

The 3D printing industry is at an interesting point, with both good and bad news coming out on a regular basis. The most recent bad news comes from the earnings (losses, actually) reported by 2 public makers of 3D printers. As reported in the WSJ article 3D Printer Firms Fall Flat , both 3D Systems and Stratasys reported ugly earnings due to "an increasingly uncertain outlook as many potential buyers hold out for what they hope will be better, faster machines." Office Dynamics

Must We Multi-task? Maybe It’s Better Not To. After all, multi-tasking is not what it’s all cracked up to be. How To Use Multiple Task Managers

Productivityist

While it is ideal to have one task management solution on an ongoing basis, for some of us that just isn’t a reality. Maybe the tool you use doesn’t allow for collaborative task management but has an outstanding feature set that is very tough to beat – such as OmniFocus.

Amazon and the Growth of the Independent Workforce

Small Business Labs

The Internet has lit up with reactions to the New York Times article on Amazon's bruising, data-driven, "purposeful Darwinism" culture. The vast majority of reactions are negative. This not surprising given how harsh the article makes Amazon sound - people crying at their desks, sick people callously culled, lots of backstabbing, etc. The reason we care about this issue is how companies treat their workers has a major impact on the independent workforce.

Everyone wants to read more books, but we don’t spend the time required to do so. Reading is difficult in an environment based on feed refreshes and new blog posts. It’s a noisy world, and reading just doesn’t fit in that well. Or does it? In many ways, reading is like a home-cooked meal compared to the fast food diet of instant information found on your screen.
