Bad Career Advice: Never Give Up

Eat Your Career

This post is part of my Bad Career Advice series in which I expose outdated, clichéd, and counterproductive advice for exactly what it is. I understand the sentiment behind this piece of advice and clearly, its intent is to push you past your own perceived limits. While its heart is in the right place, I believe the advice to “never give up&# also ignores the blatant reality of life and instills the idea that quitting for any reason is an unacceptable act of defeat.

Creating Your Office in the Cloud

Tips From T. Marie

To the Cloud ! It’s the latest catch phrase for Windows 7 , but the cloud has been around for awhile. In fact, working in the cloud is something that most virtual assistants like me have been doing for quite some time. Virtual office or office in the cloud, they can be used interchangeably. But if you’re like a lot of people you aren’t quite sure just how to adopt the whole ‘in the cloud’ thing when it comes to your business and more specifically your office.

Ultralight Versus Lean Startups

Small Business Labs

The phrase " lean startup " was coined by software entrepreneur Eric Reis a few years ago.  A lean startup uses open source technologies and other low cost products to keep their burn rate low.  At the same time, lean startups also make continual and rapid revisions to their products based on feedback from customers.  The term and methods have been widely adopted in Silicon Valley and his blog, Lessons Learned , has become a Mecca for software and web

We record our own conversations while in the same room, using digital recorders. Interviews are either recorded while in the same place as the interviewee, using digital recorder. Or, if the individual we are interviewing is at another location, we use Skype’s conference calling feature.

Learn to Handle Verbal Smackdowns

On The Job

In my family, there's a saying about "two floors later." It has to do with the time a family member had a run-in with another person and couldn't think of a good comeback. Instead, she got on the elevator, fuming. She says that "two floors later" on the elevator ride she came up with just the right comeback. Now, whenever our family has a difficult conversation and can't think of the right way to respond at that moment, we talk about how "two floors later" we found the right response.

The Wall Street Journal on The Rise of the Lazy Locavore

Fun article on lazy locavores in the WSJ.  We first wrote about this trend several years ago, and  last year we became one.    Locavores try to purchase as much food as possible from locally grown sources.  Locavores do this for a variety of reasons.  Local food is fresher, tastes better, is more likely to be organic and often (but not always) less harmful to the environment.  The best source, of course, is a home garden.  But lazy locavores

Why Freedom is bad for entrepreneurs

The Shrink for Entrepreneurs

Recently, I’ve been having a few discussions with business owners about the second point in my entrepreneurial hat trick. I’ve been meditating on freedom - that glorious, abstract stuff that goes with wealth and sanity like tom goes with dick and harry. Turns out that the pursuit of freedom has been tripping up well meaning, ambitious entrepreneurs.

Making Money: The Economics of Email

Mitchell and Madeline, who seems to have the same entrepreneurial spirit I have, would rather sell these balls back to the golfers as they drive by our house on their way home.
